“The Shadow Effect” It’s “The Secret” For Realists – A Review

Who is the nicest person you know? We all know people like this. They’re the ones whom we’ve told others about and how he or she is always so kind and helpful, etc.

Would you be a cynic if you also questioned what that person is really hiding? Can you imagine saying about him or her, “I wonder what’s behind the smiling mask?” If so, are you really a cynic or are you a realist?

Well, you might be Debbie Ford. She is the force behind the new DVD documentary, “The Shadow Effect.” It’s “The Secret” for realists.

“The Secret” was an eye and mind opener for many. It was powerful inspiration, but without much in the way of application.

Ford’s documentary is revealing and quite extraordinary in many ways. It introduces us to a common but oft misunderstood concept about our inner-selves.

When Carl Jung introduced the “shadow self” into modern psychology, he struck a lot of nerves. We are all possessed with shadows, our darker side that we hide from the world. Seeing how our shadows can emerge before we can catch them can indeed be scary.

The shadow side of ourselves is often mistaken only for evil. While there is certainly that component, our shadow could be anything from being a procrastinator to adultery to any and all self-destructive habits we’ve accumulated.

Whatever our inner-shadows might be, most of us try mightily to hide them from the world and even ourselves. But, there is always leakage. Inspired by Carl Jung, Ford points out that becoming aware of our true or natural nature may be the only way we can conquer our self-defeating behaviors.

“The Shadow Effect” isn’t inspiring as much as it is an instructional piece on the ideal balance of the self through a clearer understanding of what activates us as well as what we try to repress.

Whenever we talk about affirmations or other positive mental techniques to achieve balance, we are really trying to overcome some aspect of our shadow. Yet this is often done without acknowledgment or even the realization of it. Through Ford’s guidance, we can likely accelerate ourselves to goal completion and successes far more quickly when we recognize and understand our shadow selves.

Aikido and other martial arts teaches their students how to use their opponent’s negative physical force to neutralize the threat against them. Viewing Ford’s video gives us this same realization and riveting instruction through this powerful and unique program.

When I wrote “How To Take No For An Answer And Still Succeed,” it was about using the negative outer powers of rejection, disappointment, humiliation, and failure to our advantage.

In “Your Inner Wizard,” the primary use of your inner power comes from the simple awareness that you really do have it. This is true with Ford’s work here too. The way the producers unveil it in this DVD is documentary making at its finest.

Ford, in one personal anecdote, tells how she tried to hide the shadow side of herself that she called, “The Bitch.” After years of drug abuse, multiple rehab attempts and then an episode that created her enlightened awakening, she morphed into a powerful force for good. At least that was her intent.

As she wrote, spoke, and participated in the self-help and spiritual movement, she created her persona of the good and helpful person we would all love to be around. She carefully hid her “inner-bitch,” though it would jump out from time to time, scaring herself and others.

Her realization was that this “negative” side of hers could actually be used for good, both for herself and others. She didn’t use the term warrior, but that’s how I took it.

The positive power of how we can use the negativity around us is really brought home in “The Shadow Effect.” Just the simple awareness that can create may bring the viewers to a greater potential for inner-peace and show them how to be more effective and successful in life.

The authority figures commenting throughout the video are an eclectic group, from an two MDs, Deepak Chopra and David Simon, to James Van Praagh, a psychic medium, with his own inspiring anecdote. Marianne Williamson, philosopher and author offers her keen insights as does the co-creator of “The Chicken Soup For The Soul “series, Mark Victor Hansen and others. All with something meaningful to add.

“How To Use Your Most Negative Inner-Power For Your Most Beneficial Outcome” could be the sub-title of this work.
